The Black The Sum Perfume For Women And Men (2016) Review:
The Sum is a body adornment and jewelry brand based out of Oregon, Portland. The company has recently made its debut in the perfume market with three fragrances which are named and themed after colors. Hence, the fragrances have been named as The Sum The Black, The Sum The White and The Sum The Red.
Each fragrance has a different set of notes from the other but they all have one similarity which lies in the presence of silver sterling, as propagated by the brand. We would be reviewing The Black fragrance here which has been created in collaboration with the perfumer Josh Meyer.
The Sum believes in the following ideology,
“The things we put on our bodies and let touch our skin are so personal and affect us deeply on many seen and unseen levels. They can be transformational. There is a power found in Silver, natural oils and resins- we use these to craft long lasting positive experiences. We take great pride and care in using the finest materials and processes along with focused intent to hand make our product in the USA.”
The Black The Sum Perfume Scent Descriptions and Notes:
Not opting for a variety of notes and a differentiation amidst top, middle and base notes, the fragrance happily sticks on to a single ingredient. So, there are just two prominent notes of ceremonial Oud and Black Stone.
My Experience with this fragrance:
Oud is often referred to as the smell of musky luxury. It is obtained from the Agar Tree which is found in South East Asia. The reason why this perfume is so expensive, or in that case any perfume that has oud as an ingredient is expensive, is because of its rarity and scarcity. It’s a fact that only 2% of the wild agar trees are potential to produce it. Therefore, this particular scent by The Sum is highly luxurious and rich. This will awake the deep dark character inside you. Black has been the evergreen color of sexiness and sophistication. So, in context of cologne, this one has intensity, depth and pleasure all at the same time. The notes are simple and strong. It’s definitely not a casual scent.
A stylish vial which is purse friendly and highly attractive if you want to boast it on your shelf. The bottle comes in a long black box which says ‘THE SUM’ on the front. On the back, there is a small box which has ‘BREATHE’ written in bold letters and below that a statement from the brand that the fragrance is hand blended from sacred elements and sterling silver.
As mentioned before, the bottle is stylish and compact. It is something that you can carry anywhere with yourself. The cap is silver; vial has a black strip with the logo of two intersecting triangles. The fluid is transparent. Adding to the beauty is a silver bead inside the bottle to denote the presence of silver sterling. The black bottle looks the nicest amidst all three.
Applicability: Since it’s a strong perfume, it’s best to wear it during the colder months like fall and winters. Night time is recommended, however, this can also be applied during the day for a formal occasion.
Potency: As far as the potency is concerned, it’s satisfactory. Not enormous silage so that too is average.
Experience With Notes: Simple yet complex? Yes. Strong yet subtle? Yes. What more can be asked for right? Oud is a precious note which has a strong character attached to it. I liked the sample that I tried. In the beginning the whiff is metallic and thick. After like half an hour, it settled down to create a pleasant and natural aura. There was oudh, wood, silver, smoke, and metal, all complementing each other in a great way.
Below is a quick summary of likes and dislikes I’ve felt about this fragrance:
– Not tested on animals- so conscience is relieved
– Presence of silver bead in the vial to depict the use of silver sterling in the fragrance
– Toxin free
– Hand blended
– Simple notes
– High price: Close to around $85 for just 30 ml
– Weak sillage

Conclusion: Hit (Only if you’re looking for a metallic whiff)
