Polo Red Ralph Lauren Cologne For Men (2013) Review:
Red Polo by Ralph Lauren is a woody, spicy fragrance for men. Polo Red was launched in 2013. Olivier Gillotin is the man behind this fragrance.
Polo Red Notes and Perfume Scent Descriptions:
The top notes are grapefruit, Italian lemon (Italian lime) and blueberry; the middle notes are saffron and sage; and in the dry downs, the notes are wood, amber, and coffee.
What I felt about this fragrance?:
I will answer with an anecdote – I took the first whiff of this fragrance with a friend. I did not give any comment and she said, “Smells like an ex-boyfriend.” I naturally looked confused and asked, “Is that good?” “An ex-boyfriend is someone who you want to forget, so no, it is not pleasant. In fact, if I take home a man who is using it, my dad would shrink immediately,” she replied. There I got the verdict on whether to get it or not!
Anyways, my experience with it was somewhere along the similar lines. Sweet, too rowdy and a rather unpleasant sweaty after notes (I guess that is the union of sage and citrus). Personally, if I think about it, it is a pretty mediocre fragrance (sorry if I offend anyone who likes it) without much quality.
Perhaps my perception of clean fragrances differs too much to what is now considered “clean” but I refuse to think that it can equate to Eau Sauvage, for instance.
On a more positive note, amber, coffee, citrus, something very sweet and a sweaty touch – in this, I define this fragrance that is suitable for maybe the youth and somebody who enjoys these kinds of sweetish fragrances. No one can say it is ugly or smelly. It’s just very common, nothing elaborate, a fragrance without any risk. It is a simple fragrance, quite “chocolaty” and too sweet for my taste.
What I thought about its packaging:
Do not confuse the color of the bottle with its contents. From the fragrance “Red”, I expected something a little more intense as in a perfume for outings but this one certainly did not meet my expectations.
Sillage and Longevity:
Although it is sweet, it does not have a good staying power and it has a moderate sillage so I do not see it as a good choice for an evening out. The aroma is wasted because I do not think it has any kind of staying power. I see it as a fragrance for winters where it would work well for an everyday use given that you liked its smell in the first place.
All in all, it is a fragrance to better enjoy a very cold day or night. The base notes of coffee and wood are perceived quite well. It has 4 hours duration at its best and a moderate trail. In my personal opinion, it can be called slightly better Polo Black Cologne. But that does not mean that this is a delicious fragrance.
Personally, this Polo Cologne is not me and I think Ralph Lauren missed his mark with this one. Its composition is not very original but the woodsy aroma can be quite pleasing for the youth. But if you want something more intense and innovative, it is better to look in another direction. There are plenty other better options and not quite as expensive as this one. Polo Red is a definite miss and a slacker at that.
